Start-up Ventures: Technical Product Manager – Insurance Incubation

        Venture Studio – Portfolio
        New York

Insurance Incubation, a commercial property Managing General Agent (MGA) specializing in insurance for catastrophe-prone coastal areas, that spun out from D. E. Shaw’s venture studios, seeks a pragmatic, engineering-oriented technical product manager. This role will incorporate modern AI tooling into the MGA’s operational backbone, focusing on leveraging off-the-shelf AI technologies to enhance and automate middle- and back-office functions. This position offers the chance to apply technical skills and a product-focused mindset to build new solutions from the ground up within an engaging, inclusive, and fast-paced start-up environment.

        What you’ll do day-to-day

        • Drive the design and deployment of AI-driven internal tools using LLMs and off-the-shelf AI APIs to automate and streamline core operations such as policy servicing, claims processing, and customer interactions.
        • Implement AI chat interfaces to handle routine customer service inquiries, with escalation paths for human handoff.
        • Enable structured data pipelines from semi-structured documents (e.g. PDFs, emails, forms) using LLMs and open-source tools.
        • Create proprietary catastrophe response systems that prototype human-in-the-loop automation, augmenting human judgment during high-stakes moments—like major weather events—by using AI to trigger outreach, allocate resources, and streamline operational handoffs in real time.
        • Partner with engineering and operations teams to ensure AI-driven capabilities are effectively integrated into core workflows, data environments, and external infrastructure—allowing for seamless automation without brittle handoffs.

        Who we’re looking for

        • A bachelor’s degree or higher in a technical or related field, and three to five years of relevant experience, ideally within start-ups, R&D teams, or fast-paced technology organizations.
        • Demonstrated experience building or managing the development of internal tools, AI prototypes, or MVPs, especially in zero-to-one or early-stage environments.
        • Proficiency with deploying LLMs, APIs, and orchestration frameworks (e.g., LangChain, Llama Index) to rapidly deliver business impact is required; experience building AI prototypes or agents using OpenAI, Claude, Hugging Face, or similar platforms is preferred.
        • Hands-on familiarity with engineering teams, including experience writing code or working in close, iterative partnership with engineers.
        • Ability to turn ambiguous requirements into pragmatic, iterative experiments with minimal oversight, and an intuitive sense for when to build solutions from scratch versus leveraging off-the-shelf products and APIs (e.g., Zapier, Twilio, form processing tools) to accelerate progress.
        • Excellent communication skills and comfort working in cross-functional teams with both technical and business stakeholders.
        • Experience deploying chatbots, voice agents, or workflow automation tools is preferred, as is an enthusiasm for building systems that make a difference during crisis moments.
        • The expected annual base salary for this position is $185,000 to $230,000.
