Learning and Development Specialist – Professional Skills

Join our Human Capital team in New York

The D. E. Shaw group seeks an experienced professional to join the firm’s Learning & Development (L&D) team, focusing on designing learning offerings to bolster professional skills. Professional skills development for entry-level and more tenured staff is a critical part of the firm’s talent strategy and is key to developing our future leaders and ensuring the firm’s long-term success. The innovation-focused L&D team creates customized learning offerings to help our exceptional talent excel in their careers and roles. This role offers the opportunity to work in an inclusive, collaborative, and engaging working environment.

        What you’ll do day-to-day

You’ll develop content and design creative and highly bespoke learning offerings for staff across a wide range of roles and seniorities. Skills covered could include project management, idea generation, prioritization, effective interviewing, and time management. You’ll work with internal and external experts to identify best practices, develop and deliver customized programming (such as case-based workshops, online simulations, group coaching, and/or on-demand resources), and measure impact. Depending on your expertise and interest, you’ll also have opportunities to facilitate classes. You’ll collaborate closely with Human Capital colleagues, business stakeholders, and external vendors and partners.

        Who we’re looking for

        • Candidates should have a bachelor’s degree or higher and an impressive record of academic and professional achievement, along with eight or more years of professional experience, at least some of it in a learning and development capacity. A master’s in education, organizational development, business administration, law, or other advanced degree is a plus but not required.
        • The ability to manage multiple projects at once, interact and collaborate productively with teammates and stakeholders across the firm, navigate ambiguity skillfully, and demonstrate an adaptable customer service mindset is vital.
        • Critical thinkers who can quickly get up to speed on new content areas by researching and synthesizing a wide range of information and conveying it succinctly are highly sought after.
        • Sound judgment, a commitment to setting and achieving ambitious goals, and excellent written and verbal communication skills are essential, as is keen attention to detail.
        • We welcome applicants from all fields, including management consulting and law.
        • The expected annual base salary for this position is $175,000 to $225,000. Our compensation and benefits package includes variable compensation in the form of a year-end bonus, guaranteed in the first year of hire, and benefits including medical and prescription drug coverage, 401(k) contribution matching, wellness reimbursement, family building benefits, and a charitable gift match program.

At the D. E. Shaw group, we believe the diversity of our employees is core to our strength and success. We are committed to supporting our people in work and in life, which is why we offer benefits such as a family planning and surrogacy program and a charitable gift match to all full-time employees.
