        Join our D. E. Shaw FinOp /Tax team in New York. The D. E. Shaw group seeks associates to join its FinOp/Tax team. This team handles fund and management company accounting, management reporting, profit and loss monitoring, tax (planning and operations), compliance, investor relations, reconciliations, and special projects. This role offers the opportunity to be part of a collaborative and engaging working environment.

        What you’ll do day-to-day

        • Assist with the tax compliance of complex management companies, including gathering information and attending meetings with other D. E. Shaw teams to understand the economics of these companies.
        • Review federal and state tax laws and regulations to ensure compliance in tax work-papers.
        • Analyze and compute taxable income and allocation of income for investors and partners.
        • Review federal and state tax returns and K-1s issued to partners, conduct final reviews of K-1s issued to investors, and analyze updates to K-1 requirements by the Internal Revenue Service (“IRS”).
        • Prepare tax work-papers by analyzing book income from various sources to compute the taxable income and determine their composition.
        • Review tax reports provided by the Tax Technology team and analyze tax treatment.
        • Collaborate with senior team members to finalize tax mapping algorithms for trial balances and the calculation of taxable income.
        • Review profit-and-loss reports to ensure income and losses flow correctly.

        Who we’re looking for

        • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, taxation or a related field is required, plus three years of experience with preparing tax work-papers, including book-to-tax reconciliation, cumulative tax analysis and taxable income on sales of deals; reviewing GAAP income statement and balance sheet and compute taxable income; preparing, reviewing, and presenting tax work-papers, including analyzing taxable income and presentations of such work; reading and analyzing changes in tax laws and regulations; preparing and presenting on tax analytical reports, including historical tax character and effective tax rates, to senior managers; working with managers and outside consultants on tax compliance for foreign entities; preparing and reviewing deferred tax computations of domestic and foreign entities; preparing monthly and quarterly work-papers and tax returns; reviewing tax returns and associated footnote disclosures; comparing prior year’s returns and making any additional changes or comments for the current year; and, reviewing notices received from tax authorities and making necessary adjustments to the work-papers.
        • Alternatively, the employer will accept a chartered accountant membership or Certified Public Accountant license, plus three years of experience in preparing tax work-papers, including book-to-tax reconciliation, cumulative tax analysis and taxable income on sales of deals; reviewing GAAP income statement and balance sheet and compute taxable income; preparing, reviewing, and presenting tax work-papers, including analyzing taxable income and presentations of such work; reading and analyzing changes in tax laws and regulations; preparing and presenting on tax analytical reports, including historical tax character and effective tax rates, to senior managers; working with managers and outside consultants on tax compliance for foreign entities; preparing and reviewing deferred tax computations of domestic and foreign entities; preparing monthly and quarterly work-papers and tax returns; reviewing tax returns and associated footnote disclosures; comparing prior year’s returns and making any additional changes or comments for the current year; and, reviewing notices received from tax authorities and making necessary adjustments to the work-papers.
        • The annual base salary for this position is $130,000- $150,000. Our compensation and benefits package includes variable compensation in the form of a year-end bonus, guaranteed in the first year of hire, and benefits including medical and prescription drug coverage, 401(k) contribution matching, wellness reimbursement, family building benefits, and a charitable gift match program.
