        Systems: Network Reliability Engineer

        Quantitative Strategies
        New York

The D. E. Shaw group seeks a network reliability engineer to join its Systems group. This is a hands-on, technical role within a cross-platform team that contributes to infrastructure engineering projects, maintaining and improving the firm's technology platforms. This position offers the opportunity to work in an interdependent environment of Linux and Windows servers, business applications, and high-performance data and storage networks.

        What you’ll do day-to-day

        • Manage and enhance the reliability of the firm’s network infrastructure through hands-on engineering and operational support.
        • Troubleshoot and resolve complex technical issues across a range of network and security platforms.
        • Develop and maintain automation tools to streamline network operations and configuration management.
        • Implement and improve monitoring and observability systems to ensure network health and performance are measurable and actionable.
        • Collaborate with colleagues to drive efficiency improvements and participate in both project-based and on-call responsibilities.

        What we’re looking for

        • A degree in computer science or another technical discipline, or comparable professional experience.
        • At least five years of hands-on experience operating and engineering production networks, including real production and on-call responsibility for network reliability at scale.
        • Strong operational instincts with a proven track record of keeping large, complex networks stable: diagnosing unfamiliar problems under pressure and executing changes safely.
        • Demonstrated ability to write and maintain automation (e.g., Python) to eliminate manual work, build tooling, and manage configuration as code.
        • Solid command of the communication stack (UDP, TCP/IP) and routing protocols (BGP, OSPF), including working knowledge of multicast (e.g., PIM, IGMP), with strong networking fundamentals across Linux and/or Windows environments.
        • Hands-on experience with firewalls and other security platforms (e.g., Palo Alto), including their configuration, operation, and troubleshooting.
        • Experience with network observability at scale, including metrics, monitoring, and tracing tools that make network health measurable and actionable
        • Experience with declarative configuration management.
        • The expected annual base salary for this position is $225,000 to $300,000. Our compensation and benefits package includes variable compensation in the form of a year-end bonus, guaranteed in the first year of hire, and benefits including medical and prescription drug coverage, 401(k) contribution matching, wellness reimbursement, family building benefits, and a charitable gift match program.
