MBOSS Strategy and Execution Lead, Financial Operations

        Financial Operations
        New York

The D. E. Shaw group seeks a strategy and execution lead to join the Middle/Back Office Strategy and Support (MBOSS) team within Financial Operations. MBOSS drives transformational change across operations and technology, owning vendor and internal stakeholder relationships, leading financial analysis and negotiation, and managing large-scale programs from inception through delivery. The role offers the opportunity to lead complex, multi-stakeholder initiatives that directly shape how the firm runs its middle and back office, working closely with senior leadership to translate strategic priorities into actionable change.

        What you’ll do day-to-day

        • Shape and lead operating model design projects: structuring workstreams across workflow design, executive stakeholder alignment, and implementation; bringing analytical rigor to recommendations that go to senior leadership; and architecting scalable solutions across the full trade lifecycle in partnership with middle- and back-office stakeholders.
        • Manage DESCO’s internal stakeholder relationships across Front Office, Middle Office, and Back Office functional areas, running formal engagement cycles to surface issues, align on priorities, and ensure external service providers are visible and accountable to the teams they serve.
        • Lead the strategic partnership framework for external service providers, including executive forums, working groups, KPI reviews, and escalation management for systemic issues, recurring themes, and relationship-level priorities.
        • Build and develop program management capabilities within the team and mentor junior staff.
        • Identify opportunities to leverage generative AI in operational workflows, reporting, and program delivery, collaborating with technology teams to bring innovative solutions into production.

        Who we’re looking for

        • A bachelor’s degree or higher in engineering (e.g., computer, systems, or industrial engineering), business administration, finance, operations management, or operations research, and ideally ten years of experience leading and executing complex, multi-year projects involving multiple stakeholder groups and senior leaders.
        • Proven experience partnering with senior leaders (e.g., heads of trading desks, department heads, technology teams) to diagnose operational challenges, consult on solutions, and oversee the lifecycle of transformation initiatives in operations or technology.
        • Experience designing and managing structured stakeholder engagement models, maintaining relationships across internal and external counterparts, and translating relationship health, service quality, and performance data into actionable insights for senior leadership.
        • Experience managing a complex, multi-stakeholder vendor relationship (including joint steering committees, escalation management, and performance accountability) is highly preferred.
        • Demonstrated experience partnering with technology and data teams to diagnose operational issues, evaluate workflow and systems opportunities, and identify areas for automation, AI-enabled process improvement, or platform integration.
        • Demonstrated track record working with analytics and reporting tools, vendor or platform data, workflow automation, systems integration concepts, or process transformation is helpful.
        • Experience in operating model design, workflow optimization, or technology program management within middle- or back-office environments, or at solution providers supporting these functions.
        • Solid strategic judgment and the ability to drive complex initiatives forward independently, navigate ambiguity, build momentum across teams, and advance programs through organizational and process challenges.
        • Experience in management consulting, strategic operations, or operational research or management is of particular interest; skilled candidates from adjacent fields are also welcome.
        • The expected annual base salary for this position is $225,000 to $300,000. Our compensation and benefits package includes variable compensation in the form of a year-end bonus, guaranteed in the first year of hire, and benefits including medical and prescription drug coverage, 401(k) contribution matching, wellness reimbursement, family building benefits, and a charitable gift match program.
