        Strategy and Business Development MBA Summer Associate (New York) – Summer 2026

        The D. E. Shaw group seeks talented individuals who are currently pursuing an MBA to join as Strategy and Business Development (SBD) interns in our COO, Corporate Development, or External Communications groups. Throughout the program, interns will collaborate on challenging, innovative projects that are core to the firm’s strategic goals, while working in a collegial and engaging environment. This is a ten-week program that will take place in New York and is expected to run from June to August 2026. Applications are open until 11:59 PM ET on December 2, 2025.

        What you’ll do day-to-day

        • Help drive the firm’s long-term direction and growth, evaluating complex business questions and leading ambitious, collaborative projects. 
        • Conduct rigorous research and analysis using both quantitative and qualitative methods, assess investment and business opportunities, partner on communications to strengthen the firm’s external profile, and drive firmwide initiatives such as opening a new office or the adoption of generative AI. 
        • Contribute your unique perspective to develop recommendations that drive innovation and enhance our operations.
        • Gain exposure to our business while receiving mentorship from accomplished colleagues, and building skills and relationships that will help shape your career.

        Who we’re looking for

        • Candidates currently enrolled in a full-time MBA or similar graduate program, with a proven record of academic and professional achievement.
        • Two to five years of professional experience in consulting, corporate strategy, communications, investor relations, strategy and operations, or within financial services/business is preferred; we also welcome candidates with backgrounds in public policy, academia, engineering, or other industries.
        • Effective written and verbal communication skills, critical thinking abilities, and a highly analytical approach to problem-solving.
        • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects and successfully drive work forward.
        • Applicants who take initiative, work well as part of a team, and demonstrate a client-focused approach with both external and internal stakeholders.
        • In keeping with our firm’s culture, we’re more interested in talent, entrepreneurship, and curiosity than we are in any particular skill or experience.
        • The position offers a monthly base salary of $18,000, overtime pay, a sign-on bonus of $10,000, travel coverage to and from the internship, and choice of furnished summer housing or a $10,000 housing allowance. It also includes a $3,300 stipend for self-study materials and a $4,000 stipend for personal technology equipment. If you have any questions about the compensation, please ask one of our recruiters.
