Strategy and Business Development Intern (New York) - Summer 2027

        Strategy and Business Development
        New York

The D. E. Shaw group seeks motivated, intellectually curious students to join one of the firm’s strategy and business development (SBD) groups as interns. Throughout the summer, SBD interns will have the opportunity to collaborate with a collegial team on challenging, high-impact projects that are core to the firm’s strategic decision-making and commercial outcomes. This is a ten-week program that will take place in New York and is expected to run from June to August 2027.

        What you’ll do day-to-day

        • Be an integral member of one of four SBD groups: Corporate Development, the COO Group, External Communications, or Investor Relations.
        • Take on commercially impactful projects that require rigorous analytical thinking and creative problem solving. SBD roles span a range of skill sets, from qualitative research and project management to quantitative modeling and data analytics.
        • For example, you might assess which markets our trading strategies should expand into, research and propose SEO/GEO improvements to our website, develop a cost-benefit model for developing new marketing content, or participate in internal consulting work, such as researching where to open a new office or the adoption of generative AI.

        Who we’re looking for

        • Highly accomplished students with intellectual curiosity, the ability to apply a range of skills to complex problems, and a willingness to tackle new and ambiguous challenges.
        • Applicants should be proactive, comfortable prioritizing multiple projects, and able to work both independently and collaboratively.
        • Candidates should be interested in learning more about corporate strategy, capital markets, and economic issues, although prior financial experience is not required.
        • Individuals with a demonstrated ability to excel in a demanding, fast-paced environment. Examples may include: leadership in campus organizations; prior experience related to consulting, venture capital, or strategy; contributions to advanced research projects; or previous publication in academic or popular media.
        • For certain SBD roles focused on data analytics, an understanding of Python, R, SQL, and/or Power BI is required. Other skills required across roles include clear and concise communication, commercial thinking, rigorous analysis, the ability to drive projects forward, and exceptional attention to detail.
        • We welcome applicants currently enrolled in a four-year undergraduate program or graduate degree program in any field of study; many of the D. E. Shaw group’s most successful candidates have come from non-finance backgrounds. Students who apply to this internship are usually approaching their final year of full-time study.
        • The position offers a monthly base salary of $11,000, overtime pay, a sign-on bonus of $7,500, travel coverage to and from the internship, and choice of furnished summer housing or a $10,000 housing allowance. It also includes a $3,300 stipend for self-study materials and a $4,000 stipend for personal technology equipment. If you have any questions about the compensation, please ask one of our recruiters.

The D. E. Shaw group is an equal opportunity employer.

The applicable annual base salary or hourly rate paid to a successful applicant will be determined based on multiple factors, including without limitation the nature and extent of prior experience and educational background.
