        Full-Stack Software Engineer: Application Engineering

        Technology
        New York

The D. E. Shaw group seeks a full-stack software engineer to join its Application Engineering (AppEng) team in the Systems group. The AppEng team builds and supports a variety of internal software, from libraries and tooling for other developers, to web apps that are used firmwide. This role offers the chance to work directly with groups across the firm on impactful, user-facing products leveraging solid engineering and product instincts to design, build, and deploy software that enhances how teams operate.

        What you’ll do day-to-day

        • Partner directly with stakeholders across Systems and the broader organization to understand user needs and translate them into well-designed, high-quality software solutions.
        • Lead and contribute to projects from inception to deployment, taking ownership of product strategy and technical execution across the full stack.
        • Build, own, and maintain firmwide applications and APIs, iterating closely with designers and end users to ensure intuitive, effective experiences.

        Who we’re looking for

        • A bachelor’s degree in any field, along with an extensive background in full-stack application development, product engineering, and human-centric design.
        • Demonstrated ability to build complex, user-facing products across a variety of languages and stacks (JavaScript, Python, Java, Go, etc.).
        • Interest and experience taking a concept from inception to deployment, including coding, iteration with designers, usability testing, and stakeholder interviews.
        • Excellent communication, self-management, and organizational skills with a client-service mindset and the ability to build successful relationships within the department and across the firm.
        • Curiosity around technology, a willingness to take the initiative to spearhead improvements, a knack for solving open-ended problems, and the ability to see how small details impact the bigger picture.
        • The expected annual base salary for this position is $225,000 to $300,000. Our compensation and benefits package includes variable compensation in the form of a year-end bonus, and benefits including medical and prescription drug coverage, 401(k) contribution matching, wellness reimbursement, family building benefits, and a charitable gift match program.
