I work in the Energy Trading group, which trades commodities such as oil, natural gas, and power. As a trader, my job involves a combination of reading and research to originate and substantiate investment ideas, communicating with counterparties and brokers to arrive at agreements on transactions, and monitoring our existing positions. The job itself requires staying on top of evolving issues and events from around the world. I can be called upon to quickly develop perspective on Middle East politics, new oil and gas drilling technologies, cap-and-trade policy, or energy demand curves. No two days in trading are the same, and that’s what keeps it interesting.
I was drawn by the business, but impressed by the quality of the people during my interviews—relaxed, unconventional, and extremely bright. I was interested in working at a place that emphasized results and encouraged employees, even at the most junior level, to take on real responsibility. The firm is big enough to provide a wide range of learning opportunities, yet small and flat enough to maintain an entrepreneurial culture that’s free of red tape. It’s also rewarding to work alongside a diverse group of people who have distinguished themselves in other fields. It makes for interesting collaboration and a comfort in being yourself, and finding ways to integrate our different skills.
I mostly enjoy catching up on my reading. I’m a history buff—especially economic history—which may have actually influenced my career choice. I also enjoy movies and indulge in video games on the weekends. When I have the time, I participate in organized sports and activities within the firm, such as volleyball and card games.
